KWIBUKA25 IN THE NETHERLANDS

A series of events in The Netherlands are organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda in The Hague to mark the commemoration, which started on Sunday 7 April with a Walk to Remember. Ambassador Jean Pierre Karabaranga and Mrs Christine Safari, chairperson of IBUKA-Holland (Association of Genocide Survivors), laid a wreath with the Director General of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Walk was followed by the official commemoration ceremony at 5PM in the City Hall of The Hague where Minister Stef Blok was the keynote speaker.

10 April 2019: Kwibuka25 Commemoration at Tilburg University

On April 10th from 15:30 to 18:00hrs a Kwibuka25 commemoration was held at Tilburg University organized by the 100 day Bekske campaign.

Special guests were:

  • H.E. Jean Pierre Karabaranga, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Rwanda to the Netherlands
  • Emile Aarts, rector magnificus Tilburg University
  • Mama Lambert, genocide survivor & counselor of genocide survivors at Solace Ministries (Rwanda)
  • Tim Wijdemans, director Bonheur Horeca Group

12 April 2019: Kwibuka25 Commemoration at the Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences (VHL- Velp) 

On April 12th from 14:00 to 17:00hrs: Kwibuka25 commemoration ceremony and panel discussion on “25 years Later, Fighting Genocide Ideology and The Role of The Youth” with H.E Karabaranga as the guest of honor.

17 April 2019: Kwibuka25 International Conference at the Peace Palace in The Hague

On this day from 9:00hrs to 17:00hrs a one-day international conference took place in the Peace Palace in The Hague under the theme:

“The 1994 Genocide against Tutsis in Rwanda, 25 years on: Preserving Memory, Upholding Humanity. Lessons learnt - Fighting together the Genocide Denial - Is the World Better Prepared to Prevent Future Genocides?” 

The Guest of Honor and Guest Speaker was H.E. Adama DIENG, Special Advisor of the UN Secretary General for the Prevention of Genocide.

26 May 2019: Movie Matinee: The Strength of Rwandan Women

A Rwandan morning, complete with Rwandan coffee and 3 short films that showed the resilience of Rwandan women, 25 years after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

  • “Intended Consequences” tells the story of women who experienced sexual violence during the genocide and became pregnant as a result. A short movie that shows the impact of the genocide on the lives of Rwandan women.
  • “Mama Rwanda” shows how women today combine motherhood with entrepreneurship to rebuild their families and therefore society. The women show what perseverance means.
  • “Mukomeze: Empower her” concludes with the way in which the Dutch Mukomeze Foundation is committed to the empowerment of Rwandan genocide survivors of sexual violence and the impact this has on these women.

The movie matinee was organized by Cinecitta in collaboration with Bèkske: Rwandan Empowerment Coffee: honest and delicious coffee to promote the socio-economic independence of female Rwandan entrepreneurs.

21 June 2019: Kwibuka25 Commemoration at the International Institute of Social Studies in The Hague

From 17:00 to 19:30hrs: The Embassy of Rwanda in the Netherlands, Initiatives of Change & International Institute of Social Studies Scholars (ISS, EUR-The Hague) invited everyone to the 25th Commemoration of the Genocide against Tutsi in Rwanda in 1994.
